This is how you learn to play with a jazz feel.

Play eighth note runs/phrases.  Always start on a downbeat.  Always stop on a downbeat as well.

Once that is comfortable, try playing eighth note runs/phrases starting with an off-beat and “swing hard.”

Then try it playing the same runs, both starting and stopping only on an off-beat, and play with no swing.
